While the stream client isn't bad if you want to use what it offers, it's an absolutely abominable system to use as DRM as it's not designed for that.
So instead of a program that runs for five seconds when you start the game and does nothing else, you have a system that shows ads for the steam store, keeps running after you close the game, starts downloads when you're in the middle of playing another game and generally acts as the invited house guest it was designed to be rather than the delivery man certain publishers are trying to use it as.
As it's an online system it does mean that the CD check won't be used, all authentications will happen through the internet for most programs, this is on first run and when it decides you've been offline too long or have changed your hardware.
